Today is an important day. Does anybody have any idea why today is special?

Have a look at these pictures. What can you see?

When do you think the photos were taken?

Listen to this man

VE day speech-390

Who is he?

What do you think he is talking about?

Today is the anniversary of VE day. The day in history when people in Europe were told that World War 2 was over – 75 years ago.

75 years is a long time ago but people were no different to us today.

Britain is a European country and all of the European countries now are friends, but 75 years ago the countries in Europe were at war with each other.

A war is when two or more countries disagree and decide to fight each other.

A war can be very scary and sad for people.

World War 2 lasted for 6 years which is a very long time.

The Primeminister 75 years ago was called Winston Churchill. He told the people in our country that the war was over on the 8th if May 1945. It was called VE day.

VE day means Victory in Europe.

VE day was a big celebration because it meant the war was over and that people did not have to worry about being scared for themselves or their loved ones anymore. It meant soldiers, sailors and pilots could come home to their families and not have to fight anymore.

People celebrated by:

☆dancing

☆singing

☆eating cakes and treats

☆having street parties

The brave men and women who fought and worked in the war helped to protect our freedom.

This means that we can choose how we live and what we believe in.

We remember them today and say thank you for helping us to be free.

If you want to find out more about VE day, you can watch this video

Our sign of the week is… thank you

Your challenge this week is to say thank you. We say thank you when someone helps us. Just like how we say thank you today to those men and women from 75 years ago who helped us to be free.

You might say thank you when:

☆ someone makes you food

☆when someone helps you to get dressed

☆when someone shares a toy or game with you

☆or even just for listening to you and caring for you.

Now it is time for our wish. Oscar wanted to do this quietly, so help him by saying the words…

I wish, we could, live, work and play together, in peace and kindness, always.

And now, to celebrate this fantastic day, we have Kieran with a song that was sung on VE day 75 years ago.

If you would like to sign along to Keiran’s song, the video below will show you how.

We hope you have a fantastic day celebrating and enjoy your week ahead.
