Making Sense of Autism

Education Phases: Early Years, Schools, Post-16

An awareness-raising module for all practitioners in an education community, whether they be teachers, learning support assistants, school meals supervisors or administration staff. The module provides an introduction to autism and the reasonable adjustments that need to be considered when working with autistic pupils.


What will this module cover?

  • A basic introduction to autism, including areas of strengths and differences that autistic children may have.
  • Understand the importance of getting to know the pupil as an individual.
  • Approach autism as a difference rather than as a disorder or impairment.
  • How three areas of difference can affect autistic pupils.
  • Appreciate how important it is to listen to and learn from the perspectives of autistic pupils.
  • Reflect on and implement reasonable adjustments to support autistic pupils you work with.
  • Have knowledge and understanding of the importance of one-page profiles and how to collect information for the one-page profile.

Who is this module for?

This module is for practitioners who work with autistic pupils up to 25 years old and attend an educational provision.

  • Early Years Professionals, e.g. Child Minders, Nursery Staff, Class Teachers and Teaching Assistants, wrap-around care facilities,
  • School staff including administrators, school catering staff, break-time supervisors, as well as educational professionals.
  • Post-16 Providers, e.g. College Teachers and Assistants, Apprenticeships Employers and Mentors.
  • Respite carers, staff who work in residential schools or homes
  • Volunteers.

This training session has a cost of £55 per delegate.
